Every NFL team is built differently. For the past four years, former Washington head coach Ron Rivera was the final voice on the team’s roster. Rivera was fired in January after the Commanders finished 4-13 last season.

Heading into his final season in Washington, many believed the Commanders had a solid roster. However, it didn’t take long to realize the flaws throughout Washington’s roster. So, at last season’s NFL trade deadline, the Commanders shipped out a pair of former first-round picks, Chase Young and Montez Sweat, for a pair of Day 2 picks in the 2024 NFL draft. Both were on expiring contracts, and while the Commanders would liked to have kept Sweat, a high second-round selection was too much to pass up.

Owner Josh Harris hired Adam Peters as Washington’s new general manager. In his first NFL draft, Peters placed a heavy emphasis on athleticism, as the Commanders had the NFL’s most athletic draft class, according to Kent Lee Platte’s Relative Athletic Score metric. However, per RAS, Washington’s RAS average is ranked 20th in the NFL.
