Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to prevent any leaks while you work.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the oven door hinge

Swap out your faulty oven door hinge for a new one by following these steps.

Step 1: Detach the oven door

  1. Unplug the oven from the power outlet.
  2. If you have a gas model, shut off the gas supply to the oven.
  3. Open the oven door. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the door cam mechanism and pry it out of the track to release the door while it’s in the open position.
  4. Firmly grasp the sides of the door, close it to 45 degrees, and lift straight up to remove it from the lower hinge mounting points.
  5. Place the door face-down on your protected work surface so you have clear access to the hinges.

Step 2: Detach the old hinge

  1. Find the two mounting screws in the bottom hinge bracket. These will either be accessible from the door exterior or may require access from inside the oven cavity.
  2. Use your Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws and set the bracket aside.
  3. Find the two mounting screws at the top of the hinge itself, on the door exterior. Remove these to detach the old hinge.
  4. If your oven model has an interior glass panel on the door, undo any retaining screws to separate the panel to make the hinge replacement an easier process.

Step 3: Attach the new hinge

  1. Line up the mounting holes on the new hinge with those on the door exterior.
  2. Starting with the top screws, thread them back into place but don’t fully tighten them yet. Do the same with the bottom bracket mounting screws.
  3. Tighten all screws once the hinge is in position. Don’t over-tighten them.
  4. Replace any interior door panel pieces you removed earlier.

Step 4: Reinstall the oven door

  1. Lift the door into position and insert the lower hinge mounting points into the receptacles on the oven frame.
  2. Engage the cam mechanism slot to hold the door open.
  3. Adjust the hinge position if needed so the door sits evenly when it’s closed.
  4. Close the door and reattach the cam to hold it in the closed position.
  5. If you have a gas model, turn the gas supply back on.
  6. Plug the oven back in.
  7. Test the door to see if it opens and closes smoothly on the new hinge.
